Started career in 40s and went on to do a number of religious/mythological/historiacal movies with the likes of Trilok Kapoor, Manhar Desai, Bharat Bhushan, Jairaj, etc before switching to character roles. 'Mere Paas Maa Hai' - with this dialogue of Shashi Kapoor in Deewaar (1975), Nirupa Roy got immortalized as the mother of Bollywood. Went on to play Amitabh's mother in a number of movies.
Trivia
Original name is Kokila. Got married at 15, and was a pioneer of Gujarati cinema. At age of 24, played mother to 32 yr old Dev Anand in Munimji (1955). US born daughter-in-law filed a case of mental harassment against her.
