Dhanpat Indrajeet Garodia(Kiran Kumar), known as D.I.G. luts Rs. 40 lacs from a bank in Bombay in daring daylight robbery, leaving behind a trail of corpses but no clue. He hides the money in an old unsued well on the outskirs of the city waiting for the heat to die down before he can use the money. In the same city lives Raja (Karan Shah), an orphan brought up by Anthony(Ashok Saraf), a pickpocket by profession. Raja treats Anthony as his friends, philospher and guide and Anthony, in turn help to educate and to find a good job for Raja, never allowing him to follow in his footsteps. Raja meets and falls in love with Ritu(Neelam), a rich but a simple and modest girl. Seth Tijorimal(Satish Shah) Ritu's father, a rich man naturally wants his daughter to marry a rich boy and not Raja. By a stroke of goodluck, Raja finds the money hidden by D.I.G. He first thought was to hand it over to police, but Anthony persuades him to keep the money as God's gift so as to fulfill their dreams. Inspector Chanakya(Naseeruddin Shah) a brave and intelligent officer is assigned the bank robery case. He raids all the dens of goondas and arrests anti-social elements. Basanti(Sonam), a Churi Dhar Wali, with a sharp tongue plays an important role in giving clues to him about the whereabouts of the stolen money. When D.I.G. finds that money has disappeared from the well, he becomes furious and orders his men to comb the entire city and to kill the man who dared to outwit him.
