Youngest son of Prithviraj Kapoor and youngest brother of Showman, Raj Kapoor, Shashi was a major romantic star in 60s and 70s, known for his on-screen cheerfulness. Struggled mightily during early going, when Nanda was the only major actress who continued working with him, before he finally broke through. Married to British actress Jennifer Kendell against her family's wishes.

Despite being a very successful commercial actor, spearheaded the art cinema movement by producing Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani directed movies, like, Junnon, Kalyug, Vijeta and Utsav. Was deeply involved in the revival of Prithvi Theaters originally founded by his father, and now being run by his daughter, Sanjana Kapoor.
