Started doing movies as a child actor moving on to do sister roles to support her family before becoming a lead actress opposite Dev Anand in Hum Dono (1961). Did many movies with Shashi Kapoor during 60s when he was struggling and no one would work with him. Did couple of movies with Rajesh Khanna at the height of his popularity before retiring from movies. Made a brief comeback in 80s doing 3 movies - Ahista Ahista, Prem Rog, Mazdoor, in all of them, she played mother to Padmini Kolhapure.

Best friend is Waheeda Rehman. Never got married, got engaged to Manmohan Desai in late 80s, before he killed himself and marriage never took place.
