Did many movies in South before making Bollywood debut with Lok Parlok and Sargam in 1979. Went on to do a number of movies in 80s with leading actors Jeetendra, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan. Joined politics later on and is a Member of Parliament. Had a fierce rivalry with Sridevi, and just like Sridevi, has the distinction of playing love interest albeit in separate movies to the father-son duo of Dharmendra and Sunny Deol.

Is married to Srikant Nahta, who has another wife too. Was called the most beautiful face of the Indian screen by Satyajit Ray.
