Started as a child artist to earn for her family, and went on to become the 'tragedy queen' for her superlative performances. Personal life was a sad story too, with failing marriage, battles with alcoholism and loneliness resulting in a bitter death at a relatively young age.

In 1963 received all 3 nominations for Best actress, only actress ever to accomplish that feat. Supposed to have a feeling for Dharmendra, but refused to marry him.
