Famous as Mr Bharat for his patriotic performances, Manoj Kumar became a star with Hariyali Aur Rasta (1962) and made several blockbuster movies, both as an actor and as a director. Is known to hide the side of his face with his palm during certain situations in his movies. Had a successful association with Sohanlal Kanwar and Shankar-Jaikishan thru 70s.

After the viewing of Shaheed, prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri asked him to make a movie based on -Jai Jawan Jai Kisaan- slogan, which led to making of Upkar (1967).
