This is the story of three loks (Worlds) - Gandharv, Prithvi, and Patal. Madalasa was the daughter of the king of Gandharvlok. One day she came on the earth and was rejoicing with her friends. She was very proud of her beauty and hence uttered disrespecctable words to the Moon god. She said "Moon has a black spot while she was spotles. None could compete with her". The Moon God got angry and cursed her. She turned into a stone statue. She remained as a statue on earth for many years. . The king of Patal-lok, patalketu worshipped goddess Durga and got a boon of immortality and invicibility. He became a tyrant and started torturing Sanyasis and devtas. He also asked them to worship him instead of God. Devtas and sanyasis approacched Lord Shiva told them that Patalketus downfall will come through Madalasa. The prince of Ayodhya Ritudhwaj came to the rescue of Madalasa and she was purged from the curse of the Moon god. They fall in love with each other. Patalketu started torturing Madalasa and Ritudwaj he even kidnapped her and wanted to marry her forcibly by casting a magic spell on her but Lord Shiva brought about his destruction by enticing him in more sins and thus his boon of goddess Durga wore off. Madalasa was also cursed by a sage who told her catagorically that even after married her to Ritudhwaj, she will be seperated from his eternally. The same sage ultimately forgave her and adviced her to fast on 16 mondays.
