Inder Malhotra (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), a fashionable film-maker, is married to Pooja (Shabana Azmi) when he starts affair with film star Kavita (Smita Patil). Pooja leaves him and experiences the social insecurities of a single working woman. her dilemmas are highlighted by the parallel story of her cleaning lady (Rohini Hattangadi) who works very hard to save money so that her daughter can have good education. But her husband steals the money to drink and coming to know this, she kills him and is arrested. Kavita, who suffers from guilt and eventually succumbs to schizophrenia, leaves Inder. While Pooja finds meaning of her life when she adopts her cleaning lady's daughter and also make a lifeling friend in an upcoming performer (Raj Kiran).
