Reputedly based on the life of Indira Gandhi, this is the story of Aarti (Suchitra Sen), the attractive daughter of a leading politician (Rehman) who falls in love with a hotel manager JK (Sanjeev Kumar). Her father requires her constant help in his profession, leading to conflict in Aarti's relationship with her husband. Torn between loyalty towards her father and love of her husband, Aarti must choose between the two. Her own ambitions compel her to opt for power and politics. The couple separates, only to meet by chance, many years later, when both of them are much older. Regrets fill the moonlit night, as R. D. Burman's poignant 'Tum Aa Gaye Ho' provides an unforgettable backdrop. Compelling performances by Bengali diva Suchitra Sen and one of Hindi filmdom's great actors Sanjeev Kumar, Gulzar's powerful script and R D Burman's musical genius make this a collector's item.
