Inspector Bhuvan Sen (Utpal Dutt) is newly posted to the remote Bengali village of Dhaniakali. He discovers that under the peaceful surface, lies a cauldron of misery. He becomes particularly fascinated by Madhusudan Roy Choudhury (Uttam Kumar) - a decadent drunk, whom the villagers regard as an inhuman beast. The inspector realizes that the only thing that may reform Madhusudan is the love he has for Lekha (Sharmila Tagore). Lekha had loved him once, but turned against him for mysterious reasons...... Remade from the Bengali original, this was one of Calcutta superstar Uttam Kumar's infrequent forays onto the Hindi screen. The great soundtrack by Shyamal Mitra includes Kishore Kumar's poignant 'Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Mera Toda' and the delightfully inebriated rendering of 'Na Poocho Koi Hame Zeher Kyon Pi Liya.'
