Honest and upright Assistant Commissioner of Police, Siddhant (Vinod Khanna) has a tough assignment: arresting the son of prominent and influential gangster, Shobhraj (Amrish Puri). Shobhraj uses his influence with the politician in power, Om Gautam (Alok Nath), who does not give in to Shobhraj's pressure, and neither does ACP Siddhant. Siddhant has a adopted son named Deva (Ajay Devgan), pursuing his education and his love for the beautiful Sharmila (Kajol). Both Siddhant and Deva's lives will face challenges when Siddhant's son, Karan (Ronit Roy), is arrested by the police - charged with murder - a charge that may lead him to the gallows or the electric chair.
