Dia Srivastav (Madhuri Dixit) lives a middle-classed lifestyle in Shamli along with her parents. She and her friend, Najma (Divya Dutta), are participants in the local open-air Ajanta Theater, run by Guru Makarand (Darshan Jariwala). When National Geographic Reporter, Steve, a Caucasian, comes to Shamli, Dia falls in love with him, much to the chagrin of her parents, who want her to wed local restaurant owner, Mohan Sharma (Ranvir Shorey). Dia elopes with Steve and re-locates to New York. After giving birth to Radha, Steve shows his true colors, and both divorce. Unable to establish contact with her parents and Guru, Dia returns home and finds Ajanta Theater in ruins, and about to be demolished by the local Raja's son, Uday Singh (Akshaye Khanna), who is also the Member of Parliament. She goes to about to garnish support for the theater, and after a lot of challenges, assembles a motley cast to play 'Laila Majnu'. She also gets support from a local politician, Chaudhary Om Singh (Akhilendra Mishra), little realizing that soon she will become a pawn in Singh's politics and will have to face vitriolic rumors from none other then her friend, Najma, who is now married to Farooq (Irrfan Khan), a contractor, who wants to demolish the theater and build a shopping mall.
