Orphan Rajat Verma (John Abraham) loves his childhood friend, Malvika Talwar (Rani Mukherjee) and would like to marry her. Before he could propose to her, she tells him that she is in love with wealthy Avinash Kapoor (Salman Khan). She does get married to Avinash, but his paternal uncle, Balwant (Om Puri), does not approve of a hurried marriage. Balwant will be even more disappointed and angry, when a age-old Hindu tradition is breached during the marriage ceremony, thus setting a stage for more pain and tragedy in the lives of the Kapoor and Talwar families.
