Kaala Patthar (1979)
(Released: Aug 24, 1979)
Branded a coward for abandoning his ship full of 300 passengers, Captain Vijay Pal Singh (Amitabh Bachchan), is dishonorably discharged, faces public humiliation, and is disowned by his parents (Iftekhar & Sudha Chopra). Alone, devastated, and without any aim in life, he takes up work in a distant coal mine and works as a menial laborer just to keep alive - but he is unable to forget nor forgive his cowardice, and welcomes pain as a punishment. The mine run by a businessman named Dhanraj Puri (Prem Chopra) is poorly equipped, with less then sufficient medical supplies, and no facilities for the miners and their families. Then the lives of the coal-miners and their families face a catastrophe as water has forced it's way in to one of the mining tunnels, endangering the lives of 400 miners. Will Vijay be able to rise to the occasion or will he just let history repeat itself and "abandon ship"?
