Naya Raasta (1970)
Chander, a very successful criminal lawyer decided to settle down in the village and look after his lands after the death of his father. He tires to practice the ideas what he had studied in the books. He mixes with his workers and ties to educate them. In the process, he falls in love with a peasant girl called Shallo. Now everyone try to pressurise Chander not to marry Shallo but he was firm. what Panchayat couldnt accomplish by force, Chander's mother manages it with ease - by describing the consequences of such a marriage, she persuades Shallo to get married with the boy of her own community. Shallo is married, Chander is aghast and heart broken. However, this disappointement in love, instead of breaking him down, spurs a new zeal and energy in him for his ideas. On the other side, it is just the beginning of Shallo's misfortunes. Shallo's past follows her like a ghost. She is not accepted in the house as a bride and is asked to leave. She refuses to comply with the wishes of her husband and motehr-in-law pleading innocence. She is meted out with a severe punishment. In the meantime, Chander's young sister Radha gets married in the same village. Her husband Thakur Suraj Pratap Singh is a drunkard. Being a lady of virtue, Radha sets out to change her husband on one hand and on the other she decides to put Shallo's house in order. Shallo's husband(Ramu) is convinced of his wifes virtue, but his mother, remains adamant in her behaviour. Consequently Ramu is compelled to leave with his wife. Thakur Suraj gives them shelter in his Shikargaah. He has evil designs on Shallo. In the night, before the marriage could be consumated, he calls Ramu, and expresses his desire to sleep with Shallo first in exchange of comforts and money. It hurts Ramu's self respect. He violently protests. As a result there is a fight. Ramu is killed. Shallo kills Surya Pratap with the same spear which had taken the life of her husband. She is changed in the court with a double murder.
