Badi Maa (1945)
In the village of Dinapur, Durgadas(Salvi) sits worrying about his son Dinesh(Ishwarlal) who is studying in England. The war is raging in Europe and Durgadas has received news that London is being bombed frequently. In desperation he goes to the temple and prays to the goddess Durga for the well-being of his son. He comes back home only to face the money-lender, Gnanshyam(Girish), waiting to throw him out of his home for his unpaid debts. Ghanshyam's young daughter Hema, disapproves of her fathers unbending attitude towards Durgadas because she is secretly in love with Dinesh. The only alternative Ghanshyam agrees to offer his debtor is that Durgadas's daughter, Usha(Meenakshi), should marry Ghanshyams son, Rajendra(Yakub). But Rajendra is known to be spying for the Japanese with the help of his companion Mona(Sitara Devi),a dancer. Naturally, Durgadas find the idea of marrying his daughter to Rajendra abhorrent. Dinesh comes home to discover that his father has lost all his property and is a destitute, while the village has been under attack by the Japanese. As the agent of the Japanese, Rajendra is in charge of Dinapur and from his position of power, he seduces the innocent Usha. When the village is once again attacked, Usha falls a victim to enemy bullets, but before she dies, she pleads with Rajendra to reform and not allow the Japanese to take over her homeland. Moved by Usha's words, Rajendra repents and sacrifice his life for his country while resisting Japanese soldiers. Dinesh also participates in this decisive combat and at the conclusion of the battle is united with Hema.
