Ravi Kapoor(Rishi Kapoor) had to leave his beautiful young wife all alone in the mysterious mountain of Nepal and attend a business conference. But when he returned to join his wife on their holiday she was missing! and thus begins Ravi's Khoj. On the one hand we have inspector Balbir (Naseeruddin Shah) a lovable, unconventional, C.I.D. officer, who is entrusted with the task of solving the mystery of the missing wife; and on the other hand there is Father Anthony(Danny Dangzongpa), a very soft-spoken, kind and patient who brings back into Ravi's life his missing wife Anita(Kimi Katkar). But Ravi refuses! Ravi refuses to accept Anita as his wife. He insists that she is a stranger, an importer and not Mrs. Anita Ravi Kapoor. Balbir and Anthony believe that Ravi's reaction is a part of the marital conflict between him and Anita, and they ask Ravi to forgive Anita and to accept her back. Anita knows everything about Ravi-their marriage date, their pet dog coco, the business, the house, the secret place where the keys are kept and even her passport and driving licence identifying her as Mrs. Anita Ravi Kapoor. But Ravi is still insists and sticks his statement She is not my wife. Then, there is Mrs. Rana(Sudha Shivpuri), a nosey neighbour, who proclaims Anita as Mrs. Kapoor; there is Dr. Saxena(Om Shivpuri), the veterinarien treating coco, who adds further proof to the identification of Mrs. Kapoor. And Bobby Singh(Satish Shah), the dhabhe wala, his wife Gulabo(Beena) and constably Dobby Singh (Satish Shah), who all address her and refer to her as Mrs. Kapoor. But Mr. Kapoor still inists, She is not my wife. And then Anthony and Anita show their true colours - having cornered Ravi, they now threaten him to sign the papers to transfer all his wife's wealth to their name. It is at this stage Ravi tells Balbir to fetch his daughter, Geeta(Baby Tabassum) who will definitely not make a mistake in identifying her own mother. But to Ravi's dismay Anthony, as a priest convinces Balbir to allow him to fetch the child and all hell breaks breaks loose for Ravi.
