A neo-realistic film it tells of a muslim family's plight following the partition. Mizra Salim, whose family for generations had been shoe-manufacturers, refuses to leave the country. His daughter commits suicide when her lover who had migrated to Pakistan fails to keep his promise. The furstrated shoe-manufacturer who is branded as a spy ultimately decides to leave this country. The shoe-maker and his educated son seeing a procession of unemployed drop the idea of proceeding to Pakistan.
